James Harber Slate
July 9, 1919 ~ May 29, 2016 (age 96) 96 Years OldJames Harber Slate, age 96, of Siloam, NC, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2016.
He was born on July 9, 1919 in Surry County, NC to the late John Henry Slate and Nannie Noah Slate. James was a member and deacon at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Siloam, NC. He served in the U.S. Army 358th Infantry Division during World War II. He was awarded the EAME Service Medal with 4 bronze stars for battles fought in Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge).
Mr. Slate is survived by a son, Donald Slate and wife, Peggy of Mt. Airy; a daughter, Brenda Branscome and husband, Mike of Pfafftown; two grandsons, Brandon Branscome and wife, Andrea of Lewisville and Shane Slate and wife, Ann of Pilot Mountain; and two great-grandsons, Cameron Branscome and Matthew Branscome of Lewisville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Elizabeth Wall Slate; his parents; a brother, David Slate; and a half-sister, Sarah Ann Hiatt.
A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church at 11 A.M. with Rev. Danny Poindexter officiating. Internment will follow in the Poplar Springs Baptist Church cemetery with full military rites provided by VFW Post #2019.
There will be no formal visitation; the body will lie in state at Poplar Springs Baptist Church for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Siloam or to Mountain Valley Hospice of Surry County.
