Colonel Charles "Ted" Shelton

Colonel Charles (Ted) Shelton, a lifetime resident of Pilot Mountain, departed for his heavenly home with the Lord on May 28, 2017, while at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home.  Preceding him in death were his wife, Mabel Jones Shelton; his parents, Charles Burton, and Ada Willard Shelton; three brothers, Eugene, Herbert, and John Shelton; and daughter-in-law, Nedra Cook Shelton.  He is survived by his son, Ted Shelton, and daughter, Patsy Riddle (husband, Kent), five grandchildren; Scott Shelton, Joel Shelton, Suzanne Fuehler, Jason Riddle, Erin Brady, and eleven great grandchildren.  Serving his country in WWII in Germany and France, he was lovingly known to friends and family as Ted. He was previously employed at Pilot Cleaners, and Krispy Kreme, and he retired from Surry Industries. He served as post Chaplain of the Pilot Mountain VFW and Honor Guard, was a member of the Pilot Mountain Ruritans and the American Legion.  Ted had been Sunday School Superintendent and acolyte at Whitaker’s Chapel United Methodist Church and was active in all functions of the church for many years.   He had many fond memories of fishing at Carolina Beach with the love of his life, Mabel, and visiting with grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A service of celebration will be held on Sunday, June 4, at 2:30 pm at Whitaker’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by Pilot Mountain VFW Post 9436 and Mount Airy VFW Post 2019. The family will receive guests Saturday, June 3, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain, NC.

The family would like to thank family and friends, the church and community for their prayers and support during his later years. They request in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Ted and Mabel Shelton Scholarship fund c/o Jan Reid, Whitaker’s Chapel UMC,  P.O. Box 784 Pilot Mountain NC 27041; Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson NC 27017;  or Whitaker’s Chapel UMC. Checks for the scholarship fund should be made to Whitaker’s Chapel UMC with “scholarship fund” in the memo line.
