Ms. Alta JoAnn Horton Wood, age 86 of Pilot Mountain, passed away at her home on Friday evening, October 20, 2023.
Ms. Wood was born on September 17, 1937 to the late Willie Ernest Horton & Goldia Small Watson Horton in Carroll County, Virginia.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, James Ray Horton; grandchildren, Angela Horton (AJ) Flippin, Bridget Horton (Chad) Harris & Shawna Horton; great-grandchildren, Destiney Flippin, Valerie Harris, Andrew Flippin, Amber Harris & Ryan Harris; her siblings, Margie Noah, Carolyn “Ruby” Daniels, Nellie Anderson, Tommy Horton, Nina Horton, Shirley Dollyhite, Ruthie Hopkins, Rhonda Gail Horton & Verna Lynn Clodfelter. She also leaves behind fifty-six nieces & nephews; & her best friend, Jean Childress Conners.
In addition to her parents, JoAnn was preceded in death by ten of her siblings, Woodrow Horton, Charlie Horton, Early “Ed” Edgar Horton, Mary Earles, Betty York, Hazel Bowman, Peggy Mabe, William “Bunk” Horton, Alec Horton & Bobby Horton.
Ms. Wood was raised in Carroll County, Virginia off of the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway & in the foothills of Surry County, North Carolina. During life, she held several jobs, she worked at the local hosiery mill, spent many of her years farming & her most important job was raising her son & grandbabies. In her home you could find her working a puzzle & listening to old fashioned bluegrass gospel music. If she wasn’t in the house, she was outside tending to her beautiful flower garden with her best furry friend, her poodle, Skeeter. JoAnn was a woman that loved the Lord & wanted to spread the word about salvation.
A funeral for Ms. Wood will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, October 28th at Cox-Needham Funeral Home. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery. Pastor Charles Stevens will be officiating the services.
