Bertha Irene Simmons Cain, 91, of Pilot Mountain, passed away November 13, 2021, at her home. Born October 3, 1930, she was the daughter of Charlie Lee and Hassie Mae Turney Simmons. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of 69 years, Cleo Joseph Cain; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda (Thomas) Manuel, Sandra (David) Burton; four grandsons, Joey Manuel, Cory (Ashley) Manuel, C.J. (Megan) Carson, Austin Burton; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew Manuel, Kallie Manuel, and Averie Manuel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Sanford Simmons; and a sister, Nova Lee Gibbons.
A cheerful and giving helpmate to her family and friends, Bertha was involved in her church, Victory Baptist, of which she was a long-time member, and loved sharing the Word with others. Bertha worked by her husband’s side on their farm and was a familiar face at Gilley’s Automotive, running the grocery store. Tending her flowerbeds and her rose bushes brought Bertha a great deal of joy and peace. She loved seeing “her” birds, especially cardinals, flying around in her yard and garden. Her kindness and Christian fellowship, she so willingly shared, will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to hospice nurse, Beth Freeman, and nurse’s aide, Janice, for their compassion and care shown Bertha during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice at 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
