Bessie Ruth Matthews, beloved daughter, sister, educator, community member, and military veteran, went to be with her Lord in April 2024 at the age of 88. Born on November 23, 1935, in Surry County, NC, to the late Virgil William Matthews, Sr., and Lucy Emma Shore Matthews, Bessie's life was characterized by dedication, kindness, and service.
Bessie proudly served her country in the military, exemplifying bravery, patriotism, and a commitment to duty. Her service to her nation was a testament to her strength of character and her willingness to sacrifice for the greater good.
Her passion for education led her to a fulfilling career as a school teacher in Surry County Schools, where she touched the lives of countless students with her wisdom, patience, and unwavering commitment to their success. Her impact extended far beyond the classroom, earning her the admiration and respect of colleagues, students, and parents alike.
Devoted to her faith and community, Bessie was an active member of Siloam Baptist Church, where she found solace, fellowship, and spiritual nourishment. Her involvement in the Siloam Home Extension Club and the Retired Teachers NCAE demonstrated her enduring dedication to supporting and uplifting those around her.
In addition to her professional and community accomplishments, Bessie cherished her family above all else. She was preceded in death by her dear brothers and sisters, James Oliver Matthews, George T. Matthews, Opal M. Bailey, Frances M. Goldberg, Betty M. Sequin, Charles Matthews, Virgil W. Matthews. Those left to cherish her memory are her sister-in-law, Betty George Matthews; 14 nieces and nephews and their spouses and their children; along with a host of friends who will deeply miss her warmth, generosity, and unwavering love.
Bessie Ruth Matthews will be remembered for her boundless compassion, her steadfast faith, and her profound impact on the lives of all who knew her. Though she may be gone from our sight, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have known her. May she rest in eternal peace, knowing that her legacy of love and service will endure for generations to come.
A private military honor service will be held. She will be buried at the Siloam Baptist Church cemetery. Pastor Jarrod Seal will be officiating the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, honoring Bessie's commitment to her faith community and ensuring the upkeep of a place that held deep significance in her life.
