Blanche Loretta (McMillan) Murphy

Blanche Loretta McMillan Murphy, 85, of Pilot Mountain, passed away August 1, 2021, at Central Continuing Care. Born August 5, 1935, she was the daughter of Robert L. and Bertie Jones McMillan. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her daughter and son-in-law, Jeannie (Patrick) Armentrout; three grandchildren, Catherine Armentrout, Robert Armentrout, and Phillip Armentrout; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Tate, Belinda (Ray) McMillan; a son-in-law, Dr. Stephen Moyer; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, William Murphy; a daughter, Lynn Chilton Moyer; a brother and sister-in-law, Foy Ray (Barbara) McMillan; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara (James) Hall, Beatrice Mitchell, Bonnie (Melvin) Jones and Bud Tate; and her children’s father, Edsel Chilton.

A joyous, fun-loving, and creative woman, Blanche played a crucial role in the opening of the Cosmetology Department of Surry Community College. She enjoyed her role as an instructor and director, immensely. Blanche shared her cheerful demeanor with her grandchildren, her pride and joy. Tending her flower beds, as long as her health permitted, along with watching televised sports, namely, the ACC Tournament, were favorite past times. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Pilot Mountain. Her family and friends will deeply miss her ability to weave stories, and the love she shared.

A graveside service will be held, Friday, August 6, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Pilot Mountain City Cemetery.  Dr. Andy Hughes and Dr. Darrell Tate will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Mountain Valley Hospice at 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to Meals on Wheels of Surry County at 533 N. Carolina Ave. Highway 601 N., Boonville, NC 27011.
