Dawn Alane Mijac, 64, of Winston-Salem, passed from this earthly journey into Heaven, May 19, 2021. Born March 10, 1957, she was the daughter of Roy E. and Martha Elane Hebbeler Berry. She leaves behind to cherish an abundance of wonderful memories, her husband, Thomas A. Mijac; her mother; a son, Thomas Henry (Keith) Schmall, II; daughter, Tiffany J. (Thomas M.) Sweet; and “adopted” daughter, Rebeca Andrades; a brother, Jeffrey (Phoebe) Berry; sister, Janae (Steve) Hurshman; five grandchildren, Geoffrey Sweet, Joshua Sweet, Havannah Van Egmond, Jeramiah Van Egmond, Kayla Sweet; nieces and nephews, Daniel (Morgan) Hurshman, Amy (Chris) Brown, Randy (Amy) Hurshman; and several Hurshman great nieces and nephews. Dawn was preceded in death by her father.
Described by her loving husband as a loving wife and warrior, she exhibited those characteristics throughout her life. She was a loving and devoted mother with a heart of gold and keeper of the “house in the neighborhood where all the kids went.” Dawn was a lover of animals, her family said, “especially of short fat dogs.” Her love and connection with dolphins were undeniably strong, as evidenced by her relationship with Kibbie, a research dolphin she befriended in the Florida Keys. For forty years, she returned as often as possible to swim with her spirit dolphin. Dawn was simply a woman of great love and compassion, turning away no one in need. She continued her legacy by instilling these qualities in her children and her grandchildren. Her loving heart and gentle ways will be deeply missed and forever honored. No formal services, according to her wishes, will be held.
