Mr. Donald "Don" Lee Moss, Sr., age 77, of Pilot Mountain, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, December 10, 2024, at Community Hospice-McGraw Center in Jacksonville, FL. He was born on April 25, 1947, in Kannapolis, NC, to the late Mary Blanch Collins and Carl Hamilton Moss.
During his life, he briefly served his country in the United States Army. During that time, he met the love of his life, Janie, after jumping in her back seat at the O’dells drive-in. Don worked as a Production Supervisor at Tyco before miraculously surviving a serious car accident despite all odds. This left him unable to work. He dedicated most of his professional life to volunteering at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC where he was once a patient. In 2010, he received the Guinness World Record for the most volunteer hours worked in a human life. A fan of all sports, Don cherished his time playing ball with his sons and enjoyed “Redskins” football and any basketball (especially where his family was on the roster or coaching staff). His family will always cherish their annual beach trips where they spent years begging him to wear sunscreen. Humbug bah, baby!
Most notably, Don was a man of faith. He boldly and faithfully served his Lord, Jesus. His testimony rang loudly and is long lasting with anyone who knew him. He was a longstanding member of Westfield Friends Meeting for almost 60 years.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 59 and 1/2 years, Janie Vaughn Moss; his sons, Donald "Lee" Moss, Jr. and Benjamin “Benny” (Deedee) Moss; his grandchildren, Katie (Matthew) Painter, Maddi (Spencer) Draper, Duane Moss, Joseph Moss, Jacob Moss, and Courtney Moss; two great grandchildren, Lydia Painter and Sylvia Draper; his brother, Michael “Mike” (Sandra) Moss; sister-in-law, Judy Johnson; brother-in-law, Eddie (Sara) Vaughn; numerous beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Moss, and sister, Elaine Moss.
Visitation time for Mr. Moss will be held on Friday, December 13th at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 5:30pm until 8:00pm. The funeral service will be held at 12:30pm on Saturday, December 14th at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Westfield Friends Meeting Church.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Westfield Friends Meeting in loving memory of Don.
Cox-Needham Funeral Home is respectfully serving the Moss family.
