Essie (McMillian) Mayes

Mrs. Essie Mayes of Mount Airy, Age 101, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Surry County Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Mayes was born on Marrch 11, 1921, in Carroll, Virginia, to the late Stonewall Jackson and Margaret (Maggie) Easter McMillian.

Essie made it to 101 years old! She was known to make the best biscuits and cornbread and will be missed and loved by everyone who knew her.

Mrs. Essie Mayes is survived by her sisters; Joyce Samuels, Beaulah Edwards, Birtie Hawks, and Imogene Hodge; her special niece and nephew Teedy and Sue and will be loved and missed by many nieces and nephews both great and great-great. The family wants to give special thanks to the staff at Surry County Health and Rehabilitation for the care provided to Essie during her time there.

In addition to her parents Essie Mayes was predeceased by three husbands; Harvey Ruth, Rufus Jones, and Thad Mayes; her daughter Wanda Lea Ruth; her brothers Joel, Roger, Raymond, William, Robert, and Raleigh McMillian; as well as her sisters Ocie Felts, Mary Jones, and Blanche Williams.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, March 18th, 2022, at Sandy Ridge Primitive Baptist Church in Cana, VA at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be held Friday, March 18th, 2022, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Marion Cemetery in Cana, VA.
