Howard Hunter, Sr. Obituary

Howard Coolidge Hunter, Sr., 96, of Pilot Mountain, passed away December 17, 2021, at his home. Born March 24, 1925, he was the son of Thomas Lacy and Murphy Jessup Hunter. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 35 years, Glenda Stewart Hunter; a son, Howard C. Hunter, Jr.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda Hunter Jessup, Susan H. (J.R.) Arrington, Faye H. (Steve) Slawter; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Kevin) Clayton, Amanda (Keith) Miller, Derrick (Lynn) Hunter, Bruce (Georgia) Boyd, Shawn Hunter; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan Hunter, Molly (Ben) Holt, Latham (Katie) Hunter, Jesselyn Clayton, Caden Clayton, Owen Miller, Nolan Miller; and a surviving sister, Shelby Ferguson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Charlie, Dillard, Richard, Johnny, Aldie, Elmer, and Billy Ray Hunter; and three sisters, Hallie Hooker, Ruby Wilson, and Mallie Hunter; and a brother-in-law, Cecil Ferguson.

Having grown up in a large family, Howard mastered a strong work ethic. As an adult, he worked his own farm, raising tobacco and beef cattle, and worked the tobacco market as well. He met and married Glenda Stewart and he continued raising animals and gardening. In his later years, he and Glenda raised mini horses, llamas, and donkeys and tended his flower gardens. They always found time to set off on adventures and traveled anywhere from the New England states to Florida. He would tease Glenda that she was born with wheels. He cherished his friends and kept his circle small. However, before the decline in his health, he loved their large family gatherings. His humor and his quiet manner will both be forever missed.

A funeral service will be conducted Monday, December 20, 2021, at 12:00 PM at Cox-Needham Funeral Chapel with entombment on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at 11:00 AM in the Skyline Memory Garden Mausoleum. The Rev. Tim Burton will be officiating and Bailey Nunn will be singing.
