John Thomas Matthews, Jr., 91, passed away October 6, 2021, at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Health. Born January 31, 1930, he was the son of John Thomas and Lydia Patterson Matthews. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 72 years, Mary Simmons Matthews; a son, Thomas Stuart Matthews of Ararat, NC; a daughter, Susan Matthews and husband Allen Lee, of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Nathaniel Plant of Chapel Hill, NC, Summer Matthews of Mount Airy, NC, and Ocean Matthews of Raleigh, NC; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rilla Matthews Gregg of Kernersville, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Robin Matthews; and two sisters, Blondell Jones, and Nell Adcock.
Mr. Matthews grew up on a farm and learned the value of a strong work ethic. He served our country in the military during the Korean Conflict and later came home to tend his own farm and raise his children with his wife by his side. Mr. Matthews raised Grand Champion pigs and was very respected in the pork industry. He served on the NC Pork Council and as a barbeque judge. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His kindness, humor and compassion will be sorely missed.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 10, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Simmons Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Charles Boles will be officiating.
