Lavern Combs Obituary

Fredrick "Lavern" Combs
August 10, 1938 – January 30, 2025

Fredrick "Lavern" Combs, age 86, of Cana, passed away peacefully at home on the morning of Thursday, January 30, 2025. Born on August 10, 1938, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Fred Combs and Mary Edith Strickland Combs.

Lavern was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He shared 62 wonderful years with his beloved wife, JoAnn Combs, before her passing. He found great joy in spending time with his family and cherished the moments he had with his daughter, Bonita Snyder and her husband, Bradley Snyder; his grandchildren, Laken Hash, Aiden Snyder and Madison Snyder; and his three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda Hawks, Benice Combs, and Barbara Combs; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Savonne Woods, Delta Combs Butcher, and J.C. Combs.

Lavern retired from Mt. Airy Furniture after 29 years of dedicated service, taking a well-earned two-year break to enjoy one of his greatest passions—hunting with his beagles. He took great pride in his dogs, raising championship-quality beagles that were known as some of the finest in the state. After his time off, he returned to work and later retired again from Sowers Construction.

A proud veteran, Lavern honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany.

A funeral service with, military honors, to honor his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Rocky Ford Christian Church in Cana, with Wayne Worrell officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
