The community was saddened by the recent passing of a wonderful man, Leonard Reid Gammons aged 97 of Westfield, North Carolina on August 25th, 2025. He was born on February 28th, 1928 and raised in Surry County to the late William Reid and Ada Reynolds Gammons. A proud graduate of Westfield High School, Leonard played basketball and loved all sports and the outdoors, especially wood working. He trained in the art of masonry and welding at Surry Community College. Leonard was proud to serve his country as a corporal in the 4th Infantry Division stationed in Frankford, Germany. He later retired from Hennis Freight Lines and was a lifetime farmer who could do most anything. Leonard will be remembered for the love he had for his family. He left a meaningful legacy in the community of which he served, including attending and supporting his local church. Leonard is survived by his devoted wife of 76 years, Laverne Chilton Gammons, and one son, Victor Dean Gammons and daughter-in-law Laura Covington Gammons of Pilot Mountain. Beloved granddaughters: Vanessa G Kearney (Chris) of Winston-Salem, Cassandra G Myers of Winston-Salem and Victoria Gammons of King, NC. Great-grandchildren: Lydia, Aidan and Declan Kearney. Surviving two sisters: Geraldine Vaughn and Carolyn Campbell (Clarence). Preceding Leonard in death are his parents and brothers and sisters, John, Clyde, Zoy and Clinard Gammons, Viola Hiatt, Gertrude Marion, and Iola Inman . A special mention goes out to Sherri Hill, Lynn Cox, Doris Martin and Kathy Key for their love and devotion. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 30th at Asbury Pentecostal Holiness Church, Westfield, NC with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. and the service at 2:00 p.m. Military graveside ceremony to follow.
