Lester Simmons Obituary

Lester Leo Simmons passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2021.  Lester was born of February 9, 1924 to Edgar Simmons and Della Morefield Simmons, who preceded him in death.  Lester lived all of his life in the Westfield Community.  He was a member of Jessup Grove Baptist Church and attended Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church.  Lester was also preceded in death by his wife of 75 years, Wilma Flippin Simmons, his sister Ethel Simmons Riddle, and brothers Quincy Simmons and Richard Simmons.  Lester is survived by his daughter, Bobbie Simmons Collins and son-in-law John Collins of Mt Airy; two grandchildren, Dr. John Kerry Collins, Jr., and wife Cathy of Winston, and Dr. Todd Collins of Cullowhee; and five great-grandchildren, Anna Collins, Katherine Collins, James Collins, John Collins, and Audrey Collins. The family wishes to recognize Lester's nephew, Jimmy Simmons, and his caregiver, Rebecca Hawks, who provided so much help to Lester during his final years.

Lester worked most of life as a farmer, at Cook's Tobacco warehouse in Winston-Salem, and with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  He and Wilma were always seen together, Lester never without a cigar at the ready.  He was blessed to be able to live at home and by himself until the last week of his life, even mowing his own yard at age 97.  He was devoted to his family, never was there want for material things, and was happiest at home listening to old-time music and watching auto racing.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.

Mr. Simmons will lie in state Tuesday, November 2nd from 2pm thru 430 pm Wednesday, November 3rd thru Friday, November 5th 8:30 - 4:30, and on Saturday, 830, til 1030. Funeral services will be held at Pine Ridge Presbyterian Church at 1638 Cook School Road on Saturday, November 6th, 2021 at 2pm with visitation one hour before service.  Interment will follow at Jessup's Grove Baptist Church.
