Linda Ann Jones was the oldest of four children born to Jim and Louise Jones on July 19, 1955. She passed away peacefully on Monday morning, July 12, at her home in Pinnacle, following an extensive battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her family. At an early age, Linda’s musical talent became apparent to her parents and piano lessons were started. She was highly involved in music throughout her public-school life. After graduating from South Stokes High School, Linda attended Appalachian State University where she received a vocal performance degree in 1977. At Appalachian, she once performed a concert of selected pieces from the Opera Porgy and Bess with world-renowned bass, William Warfield who sang the role of Porgy at the Metropolitan Opera and performed Old Man River in the film version of Showboat. Linda also received a teaching certificate from Wake Forest University which began a 39-year career as an educator. She was certified in academically gifted, middle grades math & science, high school biology and music for K-12. She enjoyed teaching students at Dillon High School in SC, and Southeastern Stokes and Chestnut Grove middle schools in Stokes County. Linda was one of the first Stokes County teachers to achieve National Board Certification. She also worked in several churches as music director and pianist including First Baptist Church in Dillon SC, First Baptist Church in Stanleyville, Northwest Baptist Church, and most recently in her home church, Brim’s Grove Baptist.
Linda is survived by brothers Brent Jones (Barbara) and Gerald Jones (Sandy) and sister, Lisa Parrish (Nathan). Linda loved three nieces and four nephews. Her joy in recent years included loving eight great nieces and nephews whose love for Linda was evident. Once diagnosed with cancer, Linda became involved in celebrating, honoring, and lifting up women affected by gynecological cancers through Athena’s Run, an organization that the family encourages donations in Linda’s memory.
