Martha Verona Shelton Hamm of King, age 89, went home to be with the Savior she sang about all her life on January 16, 2022 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Verona was the oldest of four children, born to Spencer Dee Shelton and Cassie Marsh Shelton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband Mack (Bud) Hamm, Daughter Wanda Vanhoy and Brother, Johnny Shelton.
She leaves behind, Son Howard Hamm (Janice), Daughter Donna Adams (Kelly), Sister Winifred Coleman and Brother Tommy Shelton (Sharon).
Also, six grandchildren, Dustin Hamm(Melody), Carla Hall (Ryan), Victor Allen, Jackie Samples, Randall Howell (Amy), Jennifer McCoy (Sydney).
Nineteen great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.
Verona’s working career included Hanes Knitting, Medical Park Hospital and retiring with 25 years service at Forsyth Memorial Hospital/Birth Certificates.
When younger, she and her sister Winifred sang on radio WPAQ in Mt Airy, as the Shelton Sisters. For over fifty years of her life she traveled to sing at churches, nursing homes, radio and TV. She founded her gospel group The True Believers.
Her love for God and church music were the motivation for each day. She was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church all of her life and attended as long as she was able.
