Overton Joseph Bennett Sr.

Mr. Overton Joseph Bennett Sr., age 69, of Mount Airy, passed away on August 13, 2023, at Northern Regional Hospital.

He was born on June 27, 1954, in Summers County, West Virginia to the late Joseph Hiram and Naomi Crawford Bennett.

Mr. Bennett worked as a truck driver and auctioneer. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps.  Most of all, Mr. Bennett loved taking his family out on weekends and will be greatly missed by them all.

He is survived by his loving wife of forty-one years, Ruth Neal Bennett; children, Joey Bennett (Tabatha Aken), Jimmy Sweeney (Mary), Jackie Lawson (Chris), Joanna Marion (Justin), Aubrianna Bennett, and Jeannie Sheppard (Joseph Jamrose); mother-in-law, Meredith Neal; grandchildren, Jessica Thompson (Chad), Matthew Sheppard (Megan Hess), Hannah Sheppard, David Lawson, Brittney Culler (Nathan), Alex Lawson, Zach Van Hoy, Ian Van Hoy, Tyler Van Hoy, Vinny Marion, and Arahy Jamrose; six great-grandchildren; and special friend, Thomas Bowman..

In addition to his parents, Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his son, Johnny Sweeney and father-in-law, Hubert Neal.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at Cox-Needham Funeral Chapel at 6:00pm with Rev. Richard Barton officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
