Mrs. Pansy Ruth Denny Broughton, age 91, of Pilot Mountain was called to her heavenly home on May 18, 2021. Mrs. Broughton was born on October 28, 1929 near Pilot Mountain, the daughter of John Willis and Betty Dodson Denny. She was reared and worked on the family farm until her graduation from Pilot Mountain High School in 1947. She served thirty years as a secretary in the Engineering Department of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston- Salem. At the time of her retirement in 1987, she was the Reference Librarian of the Engineering Department. After retirement, she was actively involved in the Surry County Historical Society serving as a member of the Board of Directors for six years. She also served on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Regional Library in Pilot Mountain. She was a member of Whitaker’s Chapel United Methodist Church and faithfully served as the organist and church secretary for many years. She devoted much of her time to the gathering of local history and family genealogy. Pansy loved sharing her family history and pictures with everyone. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, John R. Broughton, Jr., her parents, sisters; Foye Burge and Nell McKinney and a brother, J.W. Denny, Jr. She is also survived by one nephew and two nieces who were special throughout her life. Special friends are, Jimmie King, Linda Covington, and the Dave and Debbie O’reilly family. A special thank you to her caregivers, Andy and Pam Marion for their endless love and friendship, and for her care over the years. The Hospice staff, that were so wonderful making her comfortable and peaceful, also to Rhonda Hooker, who helped care for Pansy during her last days at home. Pansy loved her cat Kelly, who was a great companion and friend to her. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Whitaker’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Pilot Mountain with Rev. Sue Anne Morris presiding. The family will receive family and friends after the service.
