Mr. Spencer Franklin Stephens, age 94, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully in his home on the afternoon of Sunday, December 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Stephens was born in Surry County on January 17, 1931, to the late William Wayne Stephens and Alphia Mae Simmons Stephens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kay Fulk Stephens; and his siblings, Ruby Etta Chilton, Sonya Marie Almond, and William Ray Stephens.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a dedicated employee of RJR Tobacco Company, where he worked as a manager for many years. Mr. Stephens was a long time member of Maple Springs Methodist Church and he truly loved the Lord. He was a very devoted husband and father. He was dedicated to his family, loved his children and all of his grandbabies.
Mr. Stephens was a member of the Tanglewood Golf Association for 30 years and served as their president in 1986. He was an elite golfer. He graduated from Western Carolina in 1956 where he played basketball. He continued his love for basketball by refereeing high school & college basketball. He was also a die-hard UNC Tarheels fan.
Those left to cherish his memory include two sisters, Nora Alice Stephens and Roxie Louise Bingman; his children, Elizabeth Lynn (James Michael, Sr.) Stephens Pope, Gerald Franklin (Lisa) Stephens, and June Carole Stephens Chamberlin; his grandchildren, Jennifer Pope Moody, James Michael Pope, Jr., Jessica Ann Pope, Isabel Lynn Stephens, Christine Chamberlin Ridley, Mariah Chamberlin, Carrie Chamberlin, and Elise Chamberlin; as well as six great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2025, at Maple Springs United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Pilot Mountain City Cemetery. Rev. Gary Mahathey and Chaplin Jack Hanks will be officianting the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Maple Springs United Methodist Church.
