Sue Byrd Fowler (February 4, 1937 – August 25, 2024) was born in Elkin, NC to Ernest M. and Annie E. Byrd. She was a proud graduate of Traphill High School and attended UNC Greensboro and Draughon’s Business College. Sue began her career as a secretary to the Film Department Manager for Triangle Broadcasting Company and then served as the Promotion Assistant for WSJS (WXII) Television in Winston-Salem. She retired after 25 years of service to the State of North Carolina as an Office Work Unit Supervisor for the Winston-Salem Regional Office of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. After retirement, she traveled regularly with her husband, Duke, and their friends to places such as Mexico, British Columbia, Costa Rica, and throughout the United States.
Sue will be remembered for her endearing stories of childhood; the eagerly anticipated Orange Slice Candy Cakes she baked and gifted at Christmas; her prolific green thumb and joyful laughter; and the thousands of handmade turbans and caps she lovingly created for patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Sue is survived by 2 sons, Michael Lyon (Annette) and John Gregory Lyon (Robin); 5 children, Donna Fowler, Shawn Martin (Hal), Tres Fowler (Terry), Shannon Johnson (Terry), and Sharee Fowler, (John); 13 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am. She will be laid to rest at the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery.
