Virgil William Matthews, Jr.

Mr. Virgil William Matthews, Jr., age 90, of Winston-Salem, passed away on May 11, 2023, at Silas Creek Rehabilitation.

He was born on February 14, 1933, in Surry County, to the late Virgil William Matthews, Sr. and Lucy Emma Shore Matthews.

Mr. Matthews worked as a farmer and was a member of Siloam Baptist Church for more than 50 years. He served proudly in the US Army.

He is survived by his sister, Bessie Matthews and sister-in-law, Betty (Charles) Matthews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Velma “Marie” Matthews; his brothers, James Oliver Matthews, Charles Franklin Matthews, and George T. Matthews; his sisters, Frances Matthews Goldberg, Betty Mathews Seguin, Opal Matthews Bailey.

Funeral services will be conducted May 17th, 2023 at Siloam Baptist Church at 1pm with Rev. Jarred Seal officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
